BUSINESS LINES & TRUNKS
These phone lines come in two basic flavors, Loop Start and Ground Start. POTS lines (Plain Old Telephone Service), AKA, 1FBs (Flat Rate Business service) are Loop Start and are designed to be used with Key Systems, i.e. a phone system with a key or button for each line on the telephone set. Loop start means that when you want dial tone from the Central Office you pick up the phone and press a line button and it completes a loop on the line. This are the same lines used for residential service but priced differently because the regulators want residential customers to pay less than businesses.

PBX TRUNKS
PBX trunks come in various flavors: IN Only; OUT Only; COMBINATION: and DID and are designed for use with a PBX (Private Branch Exchange) equipment. A PBX has an attendant who answers the calls for the company and passes the calls to the appropriate stations. The trunks usually use Ground Start, which means that when the PBX wants to receive dial tone from the Central Office it sends a ground signal. This is called Answering Supervision and eliminates a problem call Glare, i.e. when you go to make a call you wind up talking to someone trying to call in, or both calls drop. If you use a single button or dial 9 to get a local outside line, you are required to use PBX trunks, not Business Lines on your phone system.
One can often save money by purchasing PBX trunks on a T-1. DID trunks allow an individual to give out a number that bypasses the operator and sends the call directly to the extension. DID numbers are sold in blocks of 20 numbers at a time and these are the most expensive trunks you can buy.

This T-1 service is available for customers with older equipment that cannot use PRI T-1s, which are the most cost effective way to buy lines (PRI simulates DID capability). Call for details.
PRI T-1s (ISDN)
PRI's are the latest and best way to deliver dial tone . You get dynamic allocation of bandwidth, calling number display, DID type functionality, hunting functionality, and faster call set up time.
